Harriet Tubman (1822–1913) escaped from slavery and then returned to free
hundreds of other slaves. She did this by listening to God’s voice and risking her life to free others
who were enslaved. People called her “Moses” because she helped so many slaves gain freedom.
She was an instrumental part of the Underground Railroad.
Harriet Tubman was a devout Christian, raised in the Methodist Church. She never learned to read or write but gained wisdom by learning Bible stories and memorizing Scripture.
She would often quote Scripture when speaking to groups or individuals.
